The looming election: a union perspective - Sam Huggard & Annie Newman - AKL

Registration is closed for this event

Working people in unions have made some major advances recently, across areas like equal pay, secure hours and having more say at work. There is still much to be done though, and many workers are missing out on decent work.

Working people need a government that has the vision to provide decent health, education, housing and other public services for all Kiwis so everyone gets a good start in life – and better employment law to make a real difference to improving workers lives.

Unions are setting about to mobilise their members to win this in 2017.  We are pleased to have active campaigners for workers, wages and rights tell us what to expect from a sector that needs to be heard.

Annie Newman is the National Director of Campaigning for E tū, the largest private sector union in Aotearoa, spent 20 years in the union movement and 8 years in the public service in mediation, management and policy. Annie is also National Convener of the Living Wage Movement Aotearoa NZ.

Sam Huggard was elected CTU Secretary in October 2014.  Over 15 years’ experience in trade unions, the community sector and students’ associations in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin prior to that, and National Convenor of Campaign for MMP 2010/11.
