The war on public education over the last nine years has dramatically altered the face of schooling in New Zealand. The reforms are driven by a narrow focus on functional literacy and numeracy, skills acquisition for a low wage economy. After nine years of constant assault there should be genuine concern that another three years might just finish off public education as we have cherished it for generations.
- How might the Left respond in ways that are not just a nostalgic return to what once was? What are the alternatives beyond the aridity of the neo liberal assaults of the current
government? - How might we return to the idea that education is a national treasure to protect democracy?
