Barry Coates - Empowering investors and re-directing finance towards sustainability

Registration is closed for this event

We are very pleased to have Barry Coates speaking to his new role as founder of Mindful Money. He has initiated this new charitable social enterprise to inform the public what companies their Kiwisaver funds are invested in, and to empower them to switch out of funds that make profits from gambling, pornography, weapons, fossil fuels etc. The Mindful Money on-line platform will help savers select Kiwisaver accounts and other investments with high social and environmental standards and help kickstart funding for businesses that do good. As more people are engaged, Mindful Money will also build a movement of New Zealanders who will put pressure on NZ corporates to raise their standards using shareholder power.

Barry Coates was involved in the startup of ethical investing in the UK in the early 1990s, using his experience at WWF and his Master’s degree from Yale. He then went on to lead NGOs (like Oxfam New Zealand), mainstream fair trade (working with some great allies), get a few awards (like Sustainability Champion award from the Sustainable Business Network), and become a politician (as Green Party list MP in 2016-17). He always said he would come back to make ethical investment a force for good. Now’s the time!

“I am working for a fairer, more inclusive and more sustainable Aotearoa New Zealand. I have started a charitable social enterprise, Mindful Money, in the belief that money needs to become a force for good. Mindful Money will promote responsible investment and enable investors to align their investments with their values. We can drive a huge increase in funding for sustainability and the transition to a low emissions economy.”
