The ban on semi-automatic weapons is important but much more needs to be done. The gun lobby has succeeded in preventing gun reform for three decades. They are still fighting to oppose the stronger gun laws that most New Zealanders want. We need to make sure they don't succeed.
248,764 licensed shooters own an estimated 1.2-1.7 million guns. This is a conservative estimate. We don’t know exactly how many guns there are in New Zealand because they are not registered.
We own about 6.5 times as many guns per capita as residents of the UK and 2.5 times as many as Australians. An extra 52,000 guns were imported in to New Zealand last year.
Of these, 80% are suicides, 13% percent are homicides, 5% are accidents. Ready access to firearms increases the likelihood of suicide.
Gun Control NZ released new research today showing that more than 70% of New Zealanders support the gun registry.
Gun Control NZ has recently been made aware of misleading references to the outcome of New Zealand’s assault weapon buyback program in the context of the gun control debate in Canada. We have put out this response to them.
A pro-gun group including a New Conservative Party member hijacked the name and logo from an anti-gun group for its Facebook page.
A proposed amendment from the National Party to the second tranche of gun reforms would allow extremists to obtain a firearms licence.
Please join us at Gun Control NZ. We would like to represent your views on gun control to MPs, the government, and Police. We are setting up online forums for you to express your views. We want to know what you think about our gun culture and the changes to gun laws that you think are needed. Membership is only $10.
We’re here to listen to you, to represent your views, and to submit on legislation.
