New Zealand takes action on climate change

Registration is closed for this event

Climate minister James Shaw is heading off to COP26 - the crucial climate conference in Glasgow.  What is New Zealand taking to the International table - both in terms of action already taken and further action in the pipeline?

Catherine Leining and James Renwick are both members of the New Zealand Climate Commission but they will begin tonight’s session in their specialist professional roles.  James will outline the rapid escalation of climate impacts and Catherine will speak to the role of the Emissions Trading Scheme and its relationship to other policies.

They will then move to the work of the Climate Commission and the recommendations before Government.

Catherine Leining is a Policy Fellow at Motu Economic and Public Policy Research, and leads their programme on Shaping New Zealand’s Low-Emission Future. In government roles, she helped design our Emissions Trading Scheme and was a delegation member to the UNFCCC negotiations.  She has been trained as a Climate Leader under the Climate Reality Project launched by Al Gore.  In 2019, she was appointed to the NZ Climate Change Commission.

James Renwick is a climate researcher who studies Southern Hemisphere climate variability and the impacts of climate change on on the Pacific, New Zealand and the Antarctic. He has been a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for many years, including the 6th Assessment Report published this year. He was appointed to the NZ Climate Change Commission in 2019.  Prof Renwick is Head of School, School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences at VUW Te Herenga Waka.
