Robert Entman - What's Wrong with the Democrats?

Registration is closed for this event

We start the year in with a session in conjunction with Politics & International Relations Dept at the University of Auckland, supporting the visit to New Zealand of Professor Robert Entman.

In the US, systematic communication deficiencies of centre-left Democrats compared with right wing Republicans helps explain rise in inequality. Known for his work on ‘political framing’ Professor Entman will explore how social democrats have failed to develop a coherent attack on the causes of inequality. While the right has promoted the role of markets and capital, leadership and support of those denied access to the economy has not been robust, nor effective. The alternative politics has not been clear, astute or resourced. As a result, demand for better incomes, for job security, protection or even extension of core social services by an ‘active state’ has not contested the prevailing ‘frame’. The many not heard or recognised in the economy remain outside the political narrative. How can the left do better?

Robert M. Entman is the J.B. & M.C. Shapiro Professor of Media and Public Affairs at the School of Media and Public Affairs, George Washington University.

His newest book is Scandal and Silence: Media Responses to Presidential Misconduct (Polity, 2012). He wrote Projections of Power: Framing News, Public Opinion and US Foreign Policy in 2004.

In 2012 he received the Humboldt Research Award “granted in recognition of a researcher's entire achievements to date to academics whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements in the future.”

He is working on a new book tentatively entitled Media Biases.
