John Tookey - Auckland Housing and Infrastructure 2021 and beyond: Paradox and Problems

Registration is closed for this event

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city. As such it is both powerhouse of economic activity and a basket case of demand and indecision. As all cities grow their inhabitant’s expectations of infrastructure and services increase. This drives up the demand for critical infrastructure and investment. The provision of new infrastructure in turn makes the city more attractive for more people. This of course drives further expansion of the population and results in still further increased demand. Politicians and civil servants are presented with a series of critical decisions: what infrastructure to invest in? Where to invest? What in the future going to look like? What is the definition of ‘infrastructure success’? This presentation reviews recent years in terms of housing and infrastructure around Auckland and beyond. It discusses some of the problems and paradoxes going forward and whether there is a way out of current infrastructure and housing woes.

John Tookey is Professor of Construction Management at Auckland University of Technology and head of Built Environment in the School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical sciences. He has a PhD in engineering management from Bradford University, UK. Over the last two decades Professor Tookey has developed an extensive portfolio of research, publication and consultancy in construction procurement, productivity and supply chain process. His experience spans construction best practices in the UK, South Africa and New Zealand. Latterly, Professor Tookey has been extensively involved in New Zealand's construction productivity partnership research agenda as well as becoming a regular commentator on the Auckland housing crisis.
